Zenmap

Zenmap

Zenmap-Zenmap is a multi-platform application as a simple interface for nmap applications. Nmap (Network Mapper) itself is an open source application for network exploration and security audits. Nmap works by scanning a stand-alone computer or host that is connected to a network, determining which hosts are active on a network, determining operating system information, open ports and the type of firewall used.
Zenmap is multi-platform, meaning it can run on various operating systems such as Linux, Windows, Mac, FreeBSD, openBSD and Sun OS. Nmap is a command line based application but for ease of use and analysis the results include a GUI application called Zenmap. The following is an example of using nmap by using command line:

wdzgouch@server1:~> nmap localhost

Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-06-22 10:28 WIT
Nmap scan report for localhost (127.0.0.1)
Host is up (0.00028s latency).
rDNS record for 127.0.0.1: linux-34ar.site
Not shown: 995 closed ports
PORT      STATE SERVICE
22/tcp    open  ssh
80/tcp    open  http
111/tcp   open  rpcbind
631/tcp   open  ipp
10000/tcp open  snet-sensor-mgmt

Nmap done: 1 IP address <1 host up> scanned in 0.08 seconds

Installation

Installing zenmap on Linux distributions in the Debian, openSUSE and Fedora families can be done easily, because the nmap and zenmap applications are already in the repository. The following is how to install Zenmap (installation is done by using the root user):

Debian Linux Distros and their derivatives (Ubuntu, LinuxMint, etc.):

apt-get install zenmap

OpenSUSE Linux Distros:

zypper install zenmap

Fedora, Centos and derivative Linux distributions:

yum install zenmap

Zenmap display

The following is a zenmap display that is run on the openSUSE 11.4 Linux distro:

In this zenmap application there are four main tabs that function to display the results of the nmap command, namely:
  • Nmap Output, displays the overall nmap results.
  • Ports / Hosts, displays information on numbers, protocols, types of services and version ports that are open.
  • Topology, displays information about the topology of the target host.
  • Host Details, displays complete information about host status, ip address, hostname, operating system type and more.
  • Scans, displays the nmap command line that is running
For information and further use of nmap and zenmap can be seen using the command:
man nmap

and
man zenmap
