FTP Service

FTP Service-FTP or File Transfer Protocol is an internet protocol that is used for matters of sending data in computer networks, such as uploading and downloading files that are carried out by FTP clients and FTP servers. FTP services can be set to FTP public, where everyone can easily access data on an FTP server. In addition to being able to be set as public FTP, this FTP service can also be arranged so that not everyone can access data on the server, so only registered users have permission to access these data.

FTP Server

The FTP server is a server that is in charge of providing sending/exchanging data services to an FTP client on condition that the FTP client must request (request) first to the FTP server. An FTP server can work with active or passive connections. On an active connection, if the client opens a port, the server is automatically connected actively. If you are connected to an FTP server actively, then you need to set a firewall to accept connections to a port that will be opened by the FTP client. An active FTP server usually uses 20 ports as its data port.
The Most Used FTP Server Application :
  • FileZilla Server (Windows)
  • Xlight FTP Server (Windows)
  • Core FTP Server (Windows)

FTP Client

While the FTP client is a computer/device that requests data exchange services to FTP servers. After connecting to an FTP server, FTP clients can download, upload and so on according to the permission given by the previous FTP server. Most FPT Clients choose to use a passive connection by default because the server admin considers this to be safer. By using a passive connection, all connections starting from the outside will be directly blocked. With passive mode, it is the FTP Client that requests the server to make a connection.

Some examples of FTP clients include :
  • CoreFTP (Windows)
  • FileZilla (Windows)
  • CuteFTP (Windows)
  • Cyberduck (Mac)
Actually, FTP Client is just an application or tool that can be used to access FTP

How FTP works

The working principle of FTP and using standard authentication which to access the data that is on the FTP server requires a username and password so that users who are registered in the system have access rights to open the directory and files inside. The FTP client will send a message asking for the data exchange service on the FTP server. After the FTP client is connected to FTP Server, the FTP Client can download, upload and process according to the permissions and access rights granted by the FTP server.

FTP Function

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a protocol that functions to exchange files in a network that supports TCP / IP protocols. Two Things In FTP are FTP servers and FTP Clients. The FTP server runs software that is used to exchange files, which are always ready to provide FTP services when getting a request from an FTP client. FTP client is a computer that requests a connection to an FTP server for the purpose of exchanging files (uploading and downloading files). The FTP server function is as follows:
  • Data filtering.    Provides indirect or implicit remote computers.
  • Provides storage for users.
  • Provides reliable and efficient data transfer.
  • FTP can be used to easily backup and FTP Service restore Website data.
